Rebuilding conflict and post conflict zones through education and culture

2015-17 | The artist as catalyst for change – Afghanistan

PART I – THE CHAI BRIDGE MEXICO-KABUL / 10th DECEMBER 2015

by artist Lorena Wolffer

A participatory cultural intervention gathering 12 women reading the letters of Mexican counterparts on their history.

THE CHAI BRIDGE Mēxico-Kabul” (originally “States of Exception”) is a participatory cultural intervention by Lorena Wolffer, who has struggled for 20 years to end violence against women in her country Mexico which has one of the highest rate of gender related violence in the world. The aim is to gather together 12 Afghan women from very different backgrounds who will in turn read a letter from a Mexican woman a victim of gender violence and abuse. This extraordinary and moving  interactive cultural event has been acted and reenacted for 20 years all over the world. Its shows how women throughout the world are related and bound by certain invisible threads. Supporting each other in their struggle to end gender violence and to grow and flourish as individuals is the goal of this intervention and we will be presenting this also in Baghdad, New York and Paris in the coming months. This is not about Afghanistan or Islam. It is about oppression. It is not a feminist event but a Human Rights project.

PART II – EXHIBITION

A mind blowing exhibition for the most part media and video.

Five women will be showcased : one Afghan, one Iraqi, one Palestinian, one Mexican and one Egyptian…. From the Arab spring to the destruction of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem to the fight for ending of the flagrant violence against women throughout the world these 5 artists comment on human rights violations and show us through their extraordinary work how artists can change the world.
