Opening on the 50th anniversary of the 1945 Armistice, the exhibition drew a sobering parallel between the very strict immigration rules of the European Union and Walter Benjamin’s suicide following his failed attempt to acquire a visa to flee occupied France for America in September 1940.
Ten artists from around Europe and North Africa – several of which were dissidents in their country of origin – presented works around the theme of freedom of movement and questioned the hypocritical and smug notion of “50 years of Peace”.
