Rebuilding conflict and post conflict zones through education and culture

1997 | Massacres, Isidro Romero – Paris

Produced in the wake of the Algerian massacres, these paintings testify to a chance encounter between a nationwide tragedy and Isidro Romero’s more intimate grief. For years and with relentless ferocity, the artist populated his work with irredeemably fragmented beings, depicted in an equally fragmentary idiom. Ultimately, only an experience this visceral of suffering and sorrow could speak out for the terrible hardship the country was going through – in a straightforward and dignified language, immediately accessible to all.
